Composer John Oliver wins Classical Composition of the Year at Western Canadian Music Awards

John Oliver won the “Classical Composition of the Year” Award at the Western Canadian Music Awards this past Sunday night (October 6) for his orchestral composition Forging Utopia, (CD available here).

I’m elated to win the Western Canadian Music Awards “Classical Composition of the Year” award. I would like to thank (then) Composer-in-Residence Jon Siddall and the National Arts Centre Orchestra for commissioning the work and for such a wonderful premiere performance by the orchestra under the direction of American conductor David Allen Miller during their “Generation XYZ” New Music Festival in January 1998 (the famous year of the Ice Storm). Thanks to the CBC for recording the concert and to the Canada Council for the Arts for their support of CD production and to Centrediscs for the release.
