Nicole Ge Li / Corey Hamm Piano and Erhu project (PEP)

Erhu player Nicole Ge Li and pianist Corey Hamm have teamed up to commission a series of new works for erhu and piano. Go to Nicole’s web site to learn more. I am honoured to be among the composers she has commissioned. On November 24, Corey and Nicole invited me to perform with them (guitar) on their recital at the UBC Recital Hall where Vancouver audiences were treated to the first fruits of this collaboration, featuring World Premieres of three new works I wrote especially for this concert: a duo for piano and guitar, a duo for erhu and guitar, and a trio for erhu, guitar, and piano.
Last year, Nicole asked me to accompany her (as guitarist) on her “Oriental Strings of Harmony” concert in Richmond, BC, Canada. So when she asked me to perform again, this time on a concert with Corey Hamm last week, I suggested I might write a trio for us to play. Eternity Gaze was born, for erhu, piano and electric guitar. On a roll, I then wrote a piano and guitar duo, and an erhu and guitar duo to round out the program. But it seems the duo for Nicole and Corey eludes me! So audiences will have to wait until next year to hear my new duo for erhu and piano.

It was a treat to play with Nicole and Corey! Stay tuned for audio from the concert.

UPDATE: A newly revised version of Eternity Gaze will be performed at the December 6, 2013 concert of the PEP at UBC Recital Hall. I added a fourth movement to the work and completely revised the slow movement.
